In this workshop you will escape to the beautiful, tranquil town of Fiesole, Italy - perched on its hill just a few miles above Florence. The town itself is small, but packed with charm. From its spectacular panoramic views of Florence and the surrounding Tuscan countryside to its Etruscan/Roman ruins you'll discover an ideal mix of natural beauty, rich history and a relaxed atmosphere ... making it the perfect location for an intensive art retreat. In addition to the Etruscan ruins, we will paint from the San Francesco monastery lookout, the Bardini Gardens in Florence and at a Chianti vineyard followed by a visit to the medieval city of San Gimignano. Alongside your daily painting instruction, you'll walk the cobblestone streets, browse local artisan shops and enjoy lovely cafes and restaurants serving traditional Tuscan dishes.

What inspired you to paint a particular scene? Concentrating on this one idea, Kim will help you through the painting process, making choices about composition, design, value and color. The fresh brushwork of a plein air will remind you of the light, atmosphere and excitement of the outdoor experience. Kim will demo and offer you one-on-one help at your easel. This workshop is intensive and includes close of day discussions. We will create value sketches, and paint many smaller plein air studies in order to capture the beauty of the Tuscan countryside. This trip of a lifetime is sure to provide students with gorgeous reference photos and many plein air paintings that can be used for future creations in the studio for years to come!

Kim will teach you how to find the big shapes for creating DYNAMIC design that must be the foundation of every good painting. From there your color studies will capture the local light and the immediacy and feeling of that moment.
Meet YOUR INSTRUCTOr: Kim casebeer
Kim Casebeer has felt a connection to the landscape for a long time. She has been traveling across the United States and Europe to gather materials and paint en plein air for over 20 years. Though she has painted the mountains, oceans and the plains, Kim believes the simplicity of the Kansas landscape has helped her find the essence of other places and focus on what's important in a composition. She is excited to explore the light and atmosphere of the Italian landscape.
Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992. Kim is a Master Signature Member of the American Women Artists, and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, and the Pastel Society of America. She has been featured in magazines such as Art of the West, Plein Air Magazine, Southwest Art, and Fine Art Connoisseur. Kim is the author of "Ideas for the Landscape Painter” and has an instructional landscape painting video published by Streamline Publishing.
Kim shows in galleries in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Kansas and has work in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the United States.
