Plein Air/studio Painting Workshop (Oil)

                                                              pastelists welcome

May 25 - June 2, 2024

This workshop starts in the hill town of Fiesole - just a few miles above Florence. Mid-trip we will transfer to Florence - the beautiful Renaissance city which has more art per square foot than any city in the world. From painting in the Etruscan/Roman ruins in Fiesole to the Bardini Gardens in Florence you will bask in the serenity and beauty that is Tuscany.  A visit to the medieval city of San Gimignano via the Chiantigiani Road will give you a taste of the rolling Chianti countryside that is classic Tuscany. You'll enjoy a tasting/lunch at a local winery in the countryside. Most importantly you'll be enjoying this atmosphere with master painter and instructor, Kim Casebeer. Kim will demo and offer you one-on-one help at your easel. This workshop is intensive and includes close of day discussions.

painting instruction

The best paintings start with the foundation of strong composition and design, accurate color choices, and the fresh brushwork of a plein air that will remind you of the light, atmosphere and excitement of the outdoor experience.

What inspired you to paint a particular scene? Kim will walk students through her color and design worksheet, concentrating on this one idea that can help you through the painting process. Students will start this workshop painting en plein air in both Fiesole and Florence. Kim will demo in these outdoor locations and offer lots of individual attention at the easel. We will use design markers to create drawing exercises such as notans and value sketches. Students will use their plein air paintings plus photo references they took while in Italy to create a studio painting the last two days of the workshop.

Learn reference skills that will inform all of your future paintings!

Kim will teach you how to find the big shapes for creating DYNAMIC design that must be the foundation of every good painting. From there your color studies will capture the local light and the immediacy and feeling of that moment.

Kim Casebeer has felt a connection to the landscape for a long time.  She has been traveling across the United States to gather materials and paint en plein air for over 20 years.  Though she has painted the mountains, oceans and the plains, Kim believes the simplicity of the Kansas landscape has helped her find the essence of other places and focus on what's important in a composition. She is excited to explore the light and atmosphere of the Italian landscape.

Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992.  Kim is a Master Signature Member of the American Women Artists, and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America as well as the Pastel Society of America.  She has been featured in magazines such as Art of the West, Plein Air Magazine, Southwest Art, and Fine Art Connoisseur. Kim is the author of "Ideas for the Landscape Painter” and has an instructional landscape painting video published by Liliedahl Publications out in February 2020.

Kim shows in galleries, and has work in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the United States.

"My main objective is to study color when outside, and record colors to the best of my ability.  Then use what I learn back in the studio."
